What’s the best way to win someone’s affection? Of course, to give them a few accurate and pleasant compliments! You’re likely comfortable doing this in Ukrainian. But how about English? If you currently lack the vocabulary to give compliments in English, we’re here to help fill that gap. We’ll offer a few tips and explain how to quickly master this vocabulary topic.
How to give compliments in English: tips and examples
If you’re a beginner in English and want to praise someone or emphasize their qualities, you can use a simple structure:
I + like + phrase with a noun
For example: I like your blue eyes.
You can also give compliments in English using adjectives with this structure:
Noun + is/are + adjective
For example: Your figure is amazing.
Positive compliments
If your friend or loved one makes you feel joy and inspiration, don’t hesitate to say so. If you’re at a loss for words, here are some helpful phrases:
Phrase |
Meaning |
You're like a breath of fresh air |
If you have a friend whose call always cheers you up, even in the worst of times, say, “You’re like a breath of fresh air.” |
Jokes are funnier when you tell them |
To highlight someone’s sense of humor and your fondness for them, you may give such a compliment in English, “Jokes are funnier when you tell them.” |
You light up our home |
If someone’s presence brightens the atmosphere, say, “You light up our home.” |
How to compliment personality traits in English.
Often, we are drawn to others for their personal qualities. So it’s important to notice these qualities and use them to give kind words. It’s simple: take an adjective like amazing and add it to a friend’s quality that you admire.
-
You have an amazing brain.
-
You are an amazing musician.
-
You are an amazing chef.
This structure is enough to start giving compliments. From here, you can simply expand your set of adjectives and learn to describe more personal traits or qualities of those around you.
How to give general compliments
Some people inspire admiration, not just for certain qualities or actions but overall. This, too, is important to highlight in communication. You can do so with words like:
-
appreciate – helps you express how much you value someone;
-
enough – used in the sense of “you’re good enough; you don’t need to strive to be better”;
-
incredible – used to describe breathtaking outer or inner beauty;
-
wonderful – can mean “amazing”;
-
special – to emphasize that someone is unique to you (as in the Radiohead song).
