How to Read in English: The Housemaid as an Example
About course
Want to read books in English but keep stopping at unfamiliar words and losing track of the story? Or maybe you already read in English but want to understand the plot, subtext, and the author’s language better?
This course will help you learn to read in English through the popular psychological thriller The Housemaid by Freida McFadden. You’ll follow the story step by step while working with the original text and developing your English reading skills at the B1–B1+ level.
Together with Millie, Nina, and Andrew, you’ll practise reading comprehension, reading between the lines, predicting events, finding specific information, and critical reading. You’ll also learn useful vocabulary, phrases, idioms, and expressions used by native English speakers.
The course is designed to help you do more than simply read a book in English — you’ll learn how to read effectively and understand a text in context. The exercises will not only check your understanding of the plot but also teach you to read more attentively, notice important details, draw conclusions, and develop your own interpretation of the text.*
You’ll work with interactive exercises, flashcards, vocabulary, character and plot analysis, and engaging activities based on the original text of The Housemaid.
Important! To get the most out of the course, you are expected to read and work with the original book independently. The book itself is not included in the course. Please make sure you have legal access to the book in a format that works for you.
