Why is it so difficult for Ukrainians to master English pronunciation and speak without an accent?
One of the greatest challenges that Ukrainians face when learning a foreign language is the correct pronunciation of individual sounds and even whole sentences. This is why we are easily recognizable abroad – the accent is to blame, and overcoming it is rather unlikely to be achieved by everyone. Here are a few reasons why Ukrainians find it challenging to master accurate pronunciation of English sounds.
- Sounds that do not exist in the Ukrainian language. Try pronouncing the article "the" like the English queen (or king), and you are guaranteed to face difficulties. The thing is, the sound [ðə] simply does not exist in our native language. Moreover, even both in British and American language versions, this article will sound different. Therefore, the only thing left for us to be aware of English sounds is to study the articulation peculiarities and practice a lot until we can at least somewhat get closer to the royal standard.
- Peculiarities in intonations and accents are notable. Taking Americans as an example, they always seem more emotional than we do. However, this emotional aspect is not solely related to mentality, but also to speech characteristics and accents (although they may have originated from the mentality). To familiarize yourself with it, merely watch the TV show "Friends" and listen to how the characters use their voices, emphasizing different parts of sentences depending on whether they are declarative or interrogative.
- The lack of practice and communication with native speakers. If you learn exclusively from a textbook, you may get accustomed to speaking a foreign language the way you speak Ukrainian, without being aware of the differences in English sounds. This is a significant issue as foreigners may not understand you, and vice versa. Therefore, it is important to enroll in courses that offer interactive materials alongside theory. These materials will allow you to listen to the pronunciation of English sounds and practice until you get rid of your accent. Needless to say, you can acquire this skill through the Booyya course!
