Do you have pets? Then you probably can’t wait to tell your foreign friends about them! However, talking about pets in English isn't as easy as it seems. That's why Booyya offers you a new course that will help you learn a lot of vocabulary about your furry and tailed friends, so you can describe their appearance and character.

How to talk about pets in English

First of all, it's important to remember that cats and dogs in English are called by the short word pets. If you're talking about farm animals, like cows, pigs, or sheep, you should use the term domestic animals. Wild animals are called wild animals. You may even have birds at home. During your long-awaited vacation at the sea, you'll definitely meet sea animals. There are also those among us who love to raise insects. And maybe you love lizards or snakes? They are correctly called reptiles in English.

Talking about small pets in English

Do you have a little dog at home? To emphasize its young age, you should call it puppy or simply pup, rather than dog. There are also specific words for kittens – kitten, kitty, chit, or even catling.

Coming up with names for your pets in English

Haven't come up with a name for your tiny puppy or kitten yet? If you've started learning English, then it’s worth coming up with a funny English name for your new friend. Here are some examples:

Pet Name in English

Fleecy

Pickle

Cream Puff

Yeti

Fluffernutter

Captain Chaos

Cyclone

Bitsy

Shaggy

Jaws

Chuckles

Cupcake

Teach your pets to understand English

The easiest way to motivate yourself to learn English is to study it with your best friend. Even if it’s a furry dog! Don't be surprised, but even animals can learn a few English words as action commands.

Start with something simple and help your pet learn an English command like "stand,". This command will definitely come in handy during walks. And during walks, you'll often call your dog to you by saying "to me" (by the way, it's very convenient so that other dogs don’t accidentally run up to you, mistaking you for their owner). Also, don't forget to teach your dog (or cat) to give you its paw. For this, you need to repeat the phrase "give a paw." And if your pets start to understand English well, don’t forget to praise them. Use the phrase "well done."

All the vocabulary about pets in one short course

The new course from Booyya consists of two lessons dedicated to cats, dogs, and other. The goal of the course is to teach you how to easily talk to foreigners about different animals and describe them. To achieve this, we’ve included in the course:

  • Interesting videos. While watching, you'll meet various people who talk about their pets. The main highlight of the videos is the availability of a script that will help you catch all the words and better understand the speakers. So, you'll simultaneously train your listening skills and learn new words.

  • Word lists. You will receive a list of words and phrases that you'll definitely need to compose a story about your favorite cat or dog. There will be enough vocabulary to describe both the pet's physical characteristics and its usual behavior.

  • Interactive exercises. Getting familiar with new vocabulary on the topic of pets doesn’t mean you’ve learned it. Therefore, to better memorize the words, be sure to complete the exercises. Thanks to them, you’ll even be able to create your own description of your pet.

  • Flashcards. This is a cool, proven way to memorize and review new words. The main feature of flashcards is that learning vocabulary with them is very fun and easy.

This course is specially designed for beginners with a small knowledge base of English. So, everything will be simple, accessible, and easy to understand. To better retain the new material, we recommend revisiting it during the current week and again in a week. Also, try to use the new words right away – for example, write a short essay about your pet. Or create a social media page for them and write captions for each photo.
